Portuguese is a hugely widely spoken language. It’s the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, and São Tomé and PrÃncipe. Interestingly, it also has co-official language status in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau (in China). In total there are around 220 million native Portuguese speakers, living all over the world.
At the same time, the number of media outlets broadcasting Portuguese material continues to grow, with terrestrial channels, satellite TV and, of course, web based broadcasters such as YouTube. High volumes of Portuguese video media mean high volumes of material for direct translation -which is where we at Knockhundred Translations come in!
Direct translation, is not, of course, the same as regular Portuguese transcription. Transcription is where Portuguese is simply transcribed in Portuguese, whereas Portuguese direct translation is a translation ‘on the hoof’ into English. A Portuguese translator will produce an English transcript from a Portuguese video (or, more accurately, from the Portuguese audio).
We are often approached by independent filmmakers and production companies, who have documentary footage and who require exactly this service – Portuguese direct translation into English. Indeed it is one of our more frequent requests. Recently we’ve been experiencing a few ‘rush jobs’, where we’ve received a barrage of videos which require direct translation into English. The producer and their editor commissioned the initial translations, in order to work out exactly which content to use for the documentary. For the most recent project, we worked on several hours of footage, which was then paired down to around twenty minutes of subtitles. And subtitles? Well, that’s a different thing altogether! -But yes, we do do subtitling too!
