What is the difference between voiceover and dubbing?

We often find that the terms are used interchangeably, but they are actually completely different services.

A voiceover will provide the narrative voice of a film, video or audio file.  The voice will likely not inject emotion into the content and is more commonly used in material such as documentaries or explainer videos.

If your material needs to be dubbed, then it is likely that you are looking for a certain level of intonation, dialect and emotion.  It usually means that the voiceover artist will be replacing a different language voice but will be mimicking the style and delivery of the original. Precise synchronisation will be important.

Where will your material be aired?

Some of our Khmer voiceover artists charge usage fees depending on where the material will used.  We try and be as flexible as we possibly can on this. Let us know where our voices will be used so that we can advise whether any fees will apply.

What sort of Khmer voice do you need?

The most obvious starting point is to establish whether you need a male or female voice.  Perhaps you need both?  Perhaps there are multiple characters…

Should the voice sound middle-aged, young, serious, timid, confident, playful, deep, husky or clear?  If required, we are also able to provide children’s voices.

Do you have a prepared script in Khmer?

Do you have a script in the source language of your material?  Or a prepared script in Khmer?  Please don’t worry if you do not have this.  Our team of professional audiovisual translators will be able to prepare time coded scripts in the languages you need for the voiceover talents.

The audiovisual translators will pay special attention to reflect the style and tone of the original and to keep the script to a similar length and rhythm of the existing speech in the recording.

We work with partner studios around the world, but we also have our own in-house state-of-art studio with a soundproof recording booth.

Depending on your requirements, high-quality Khmer voiceovers can simply be provided as a WAV or MP3 file.

Alternatively, you may require the voice to be synced, edited and mixed to the precise timings of the source video.  Provided you give us any other audio tracks as separate files, the voice over can be incorporated into the video so that you are ready to go!

While you’re here… some quite interesting facts about the Khmer language.

Khmer or Cambodian, or more formally is the language of the Khmer people and the official language of Cambodia. With approximately 16 million speakers, it is the second most widely spoken Austroasiatic language (after Vietnamese). Khmer has been influenced considerably by Sanskrit and Pali, especially in the royal and religious registers, through Hinduism and Buddhism. The more colloquial registers have influenced, and have been influenced by, Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, and Cham, all of which, due to geographical proximity and long-term cultural contact, form a sprachbund in peninsular Southeast Asia. The vast majority of Khmer speakers speak Central Khmer, the dialect of the central plain where the Khmer are most heavily concentrated. Within Cambodia, regional accents exist in remote areas but these are regarded as varieties of Central Khmer. Two exceptions are the speech of the capital, Phnom Penh, and that of the Khmer Khe in Stung Treng province, both of which differ sufficiently enough from Central Khmer to be considered separate dialects of Khmer. Outside of Cambodia, three distinct dialects are spoken by ethnic Khmers native to areas that were historically part of the Khmer Empire. The Northern Khmer dialect is spoken by over a million Khmers in the southern regions of Northeast Thailand and is treated by some linguists as a separate language. Khmer Krom, or Southern Khmer, is the first language of the Khmer of Vietnam while the Khmer living in the remote Cardamom mountains speak a very conservative dialect that still displays features of the Middle Khmer language.
