What will our Lingala proofreaders and reviewers consider?

Our proofreaders can either compare the translation against the source text or proofread the translation without reference to the source text. They can also proofread text in its original language. The proofreader will consider spelling, consistency, coherence, check names, figures and symbols, grammar, accents are in place, punctuation and check for omissions.

Our proofreaders can also carefully check the formatting of a document to ensure that sentences don’t appear twice, a word has not been cut off inappropriately, headings are in bold if they should be, titles to illustrations have not been omitted.  This is especially important post desktop publishing or typesetting.

What role do our Lingala editors play?

Our editors will typically check facts and ensure that the finished copy corresponds with any in-house style guide and feels polished, refined and natural.  It is our Lingala editor’s job to cut out content that doesn’t fit with the subject matter or with the goals that the commissioning party have set.

The main role of our editors is to make sure that the text is clear, will maintain the interest of the reader and that any information contained within the document is fact-checked as thoroughly as is possible or practical.

Review of audiovisual translations in over 200 languages including Lingala

Because of the nature of audiovisual translation work, a native speaker of the original speech may produce the translation of audio or video material.  This is because they are often able to pick-up more than a linguist who is merely fluent in that language.

Depending on the intended use of the translation, we may recommend that one of our linguists reviews the output to produce a polished result.  Alternatively, if the audiovisual translation has been commissioned to simply discover what is being said and the transcript is not destined for publication, then it is likely that the raw format will suffice.

While you’re here… some quite interesting facts about the Lingala language.

Lingala is a Bantu lanuage spoken mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in the Republic of Congo, and also in Angola and the Central African Republic. There are thought to be 5.5 million native Lingala speakers, and 7 million second language speakers in the DRC. The Lingala of today is based on Bangi (Bobangi), a language that was spoken along the Congo River between Lisala and Kinshasa, and which is still spoken in parts of the DRC and the Republic of Congo. Bangi was the regional trade language until the arrival of the Europeans in the late nineteenth century. After the Europeans arrived, Bangi became the lingua franca for the region and was used in administration and by missionaries. Where is Lingala most widely spoken?

Lingala is spoken as a first, second, and third language primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), and in parts of five neighboring central African states: Northwestern Angola, eastern Gabon, southern Central African Republic, and southwestern Sudan.
