Polish subtitles and captions for Polish film

Michael Brooke, of the British Film Institute, says Poland is ‘one of modern cinema’s most vital filmmaking nations’. Although it’s almost impossible to sum up Poland’s contribution to world cinema in just a few titles, he’s recommended a few of the best Polish films currently available – which will definitely liven up those cold winter evenings.

International hits from different decades feature in the list. Films from the fifties examine World War Two with black humour (‘Eroica’) or consider an assassin’s conflicting loyalties (‘Ashes and Diamonds’). In the sixties, Polanski’s ‘Knife in the Water’ tells the unsettling story of a couple picking up a hitchhiker, while ‘The Saragossa Manuscript’ has stories, within stories, within stories… The list goes on, with ‘Man of Marble’ (1977) questioning Polish socialism and Interrogation (1989) – a shocking study of an official ‘50s interrogation.

All of the films mentioned above can be purchased as English-friendly DVD releases, on UK labels. The UK labels will certainly have subtitles and possibly captions too. Do bear in mind that DVDs on Polish labels are more likely to have English subtitles than otherwise!
