In this day and age, it is becoming increasingly more commonplace to hear a wide variety of languages spoken in England. There is a fascinating array of accents, languages and dialects in many areas of England and indeed across the UK. Many cities and towns across the country are an exciting mixture of cultures from around the world. Â

A graphic was published recently in The Express. It details England’s most popularly spoken non-native languages, with Polish and Romanian taking the top spots. There are over 300 languages spoken in London alone and according to the Office for National Statistics. And for 4.1 million people in the UK, English is not their first language.
This is in addition to the languages native to the UK such as Scots, Welsh, Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic and Cornish.
Polish and Romanian languages
In top position of languages spoken in England (except for the native English language) is Polish. Polish has nearly 550,000 speakers in England, with the largest concentration of these residing in west London, Slough, Southampton, Birmingham and Leeds.
And Romanian was the second most spoken by borough; 472,000 people speak Romanian and it is most popular in Penrith, Ipswich, Chelmsford and Northampton among others.Â
The third most popular language is Punjabi with over 270,000 speakers and can be found in Birmingham, Bradford and Derby.
Other languages highlighted included Tagalog, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Gujarati, Lithuanian, Portuguese, French, Urdi, Spanish, Arabic…. The list goes on!Â
