With the new Air India service from Delhi flying directly to Birmingham Airport, Birmingham City University is well-placed to welcome students and academic staff from India. The university even has its own India Regional Manager based at the Birmingham campus, and the city itself is home to nearly 65,000 residents of Indian ethnic origin.

One of our Hindi linguists has happily lived in Birmingham for the last 15 years. Amita works as a Hindi transcriber and translator from Hindi to English. Much of her work involves listening to Hindi speech on audio and video material and providing a direct translation of that speech into English text. Amita worked on a particularly fascinating set of interviews as part of a research project into current perceptions of the caste system in India: the caste system divides Hindus into four main categories – Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras. The interviews were conducted in Hindi, and Amita had to provide the corresponding English translations with regular time stamps so that the researcher could easily identify areas of particular interest.
