Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by about 130 million people mainly in West Punjab in Pakistan and in East Punjab in India. There are also significant numbers of Punjabi speakers in the UK, Canada, the UAE, the USA, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Punjabi descended from the Shauraseni language of medieval northern India and became a distinct language during the 11th century. In India Punjabi is written with the Gurmukhi (ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ) alphabet, while in Pakistan it is written with a version of the Urdu alphabet known as Shahmukhi (شاہ مکھی). The written standard for Punjabi in both India and Pakistan is known as Majhi (ਮਾਝੀ/ ماجھ), which is named after the Majha region of Punjab. Punjabi is one of India’s 22 official languages and it is the first official language in East Punjab. In Pakistan Punjabi is the second most widely-spoken language but has no official status.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ ਜਾਂ ਪੈਂਤੀ ਅੱਖਰੀ ਇੱਕ ਲਿਪੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਲਿਖੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਬਦ “ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ” ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਹੋਈ। ਇਸ ਲਿਪੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਵਰ ਅਤੇ 32 ਵਿਅੰਜਨ ਹਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਦੂਸਰੇ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲੋਕ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਏ ਜਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬੋਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਏ ਤਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਧੁਨੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਲਾਅ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਦੂਸਰੀਆਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਅਪਣਾਇਆ ਉੱਥੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਮੁਤਾਬਿਕ ਕੁਝ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਣਾਇਆ। ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਰਦੂ, ਅਰਬੀ, ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਆਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਥੇ ਟਿਕਣ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਚਰਣ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਪਰੀ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਆਦਿ ਕਵੀ ਬਾਬਾ ਫ਼ਰੀਦ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਜਾਂ ਵਾਰਤਕ ਲਿਖਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ ਸਦਕਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਸੁਭਾਵਿਕ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਮੁਗਲ ਸਲਤਨਤ ਸਮੇਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਮੇਤ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਭਾਗ ਅਤੇ ਦਫ਼ਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਉਰਦੂ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਰਹੀ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੀਆਂ ‘ਪੈਂਤੀ’ ਮੂਲ ਧੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜ ਪੈਰ ਬਿੰਦੀ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਧੁਨੀਆਂ (ਸ਼, ਖ਼, ਗ਼, ਜ਼, ਫ਼) ਉਰਦੂ ਫ਼ਾਰਸੀ ਦੇ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਰਲ਼ੀਆਂ ਸਨ। ਲ਼ ਧੁਨੀ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਜਾਦ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ। WikipediaPractice your Indian Punjabi here!
