Goodbye to 2018, goodbye to Christmas, goodbye to over-indulgence (shame…) and hello to a huge increase in demand for our subtitling services. 2018 saw a two-fold increase in requests for subtitles in multiple languages.
Requests in 2019 show no signs of letting up – at least in the first two weeks! In January 2019 we have so far provided subtitles in: Arabic, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Czech and Swedish.
Such is the demand that we have had to start a training programme to increase the number of linguists able to fulfill our client’s needs. Because of the nature of the subtitling assignments, turnaround needs to be fast, the linguists need to capture the spirit and feeling of the source speech while being adept at editing in order to meet character restrictions and other subtitling conventions. It is a real skill.
Once you have learnt the art of subtitling, it becomes almost addictive. There is nothing more satisfying than being able to see the fruits of your labour on-screen. Some of our linguists will now only work on subtitling projects, preferring these to document translations every time.
We would definitely be interested in hearing from more linguists either already experienced in subtitling or interested in learning how. We have a particular shortage at the moment of Japanese subtitlers, so do please get in touch via our ”work with us” page if you think you might be able to help.
