Subtitling Advertisements

Subtitling Advertisements

Globalization has had a huge impact on the world’s manufacturers and over the past few decades, our clients’ advertising campaigns have become increasingly streamlined. Whereas, in the past, marketing would have just targeted one part of the world, nowadays, one finds that advertising campaigns can touch all four corners of the globe!

Recently we’ve been working on a series of advertisements for a high-end SUV. The advert is destined for the English-speaking market (the UK, Canada and the US) but it will also be showing in France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Russia, China, Hong Kong and Japan! So not only does our client require English subtitles, but also French, Spanish, German, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese  AND Japanese subtitles  – something of a challenge for us here at Knockhundred.

There are some real challenges involved in producing subtitles in so many languages. Our clients are usually working to tight deadlines, but video editing is a challenging and time-consuming process. So while we usually endeavour to have a neat time-table in place, these schedules often have to be changed and updated (several) times. Since we work with linguists based literally all-over the world, time-zones can sometimes be an issue and mean late nights or early mornings for our translators too. And if something has to be updated, the way a particular phrase is presented, for example, then it means multiple changes to multiple files… in super-quick time.

Fortunately we have a zealous, focussed team who thrive on a challenge. The SUV project has gone to plan and we’re steeling ourselves for the next project.
